Blacque Sistory

A Lyrical Journey Through Time: Celebrating Three Centuries of Black Women Who Shaped America

Blacque Sistory is a spoken word performance piece written by author and producer AJ Wone featuring an intricate narrative structure that incorporates the names of 299 influential African American women.

Originally conceived from a dream featuring Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, and Dorothy Dandridge, the piece employs complex rhyme schemes and embedded narratives to chronicle Black female achievement across multiple fields. The work is structured around four symbolic venues: Nice Dream Parlor, The Cabaret Around The Way, Nubian Revue World, and Kim Fields on Lauryn Hill.

Notable for its innovative use of wordplay and name integration, the piece deliberately leaves its 300th position vacant, symbolizing an ongoing legacy of achievement. The work has evolved from its original 188 entries to its current form, reflecting contemporary achievements including those of entrepreneur Fawn Weaver to the ultra dynamic Olympic athlete Simone Biles.

The piece is recognized for its unique contribution to both spoken word artistry and historical documentation of Black women's contributions to American society.
